Jailer 2 Opens Big: What Trackers and Exhibitors Say
Jailer 2 opened at about Rs 60 crore net, per trackers. What exhibitors say, how sources differ and where the total stands on Oct. 18.

Jailer 2 opened on Oct. 15 with about Rs 60 crore net in India on day one, according to trade estimates, making it the biggest Tamil opener of 2026. The numbers come from trackers and not from the producers, and they differ in the details. Here is what each source says.
The opening
Moneycontrol, in a report dated Oct. 16, says early trade estimates put the film at around Rs 60 crore on the opening day, and that it crossed Rs 100 crore worldwide on the first day. It describes the film as the highest-grossing opener in Tamil cinema this year. It says the Hindi version made around Rs 3.80 crore on day one, which it calls the third highest-grossing Hindi-dubbed opening for a Tamil film.
Dishalu's release guide cites Sacnilk and gives Rs 59.70 crore net in India and Rs 125 crore gross worldwide for day one, and notes that Sun Pictures had not posted an official figure at the time. An Indian Express live blog, also citing Sacnilk, had the film at Rs 21.19 crore net by 1 pm on the first day, across 7,080 shows, with Tamil contributing Rs 16.76 crore, Telugu Rs 3.53 crore, Hindi Rs 0.79 crore and Kannada Rs 0.11 crore.
Where it stands now
A tracker table on baapofmovies, updated on Oct. 18, lists the film at Rs 144.60 crore net in India, Rs 169.65 crore gross in India, Rs 147.50 crore overseas gross and Rs 317.15 crore global gross. That table is a third-party estimate. Its worldwide figure is not directly comparable with the Rs 125 crore opening-day figure, which was a single day.
What exhibitors expect
Moneycontrol quotes Ashish Misra, head of commercialisation at Cinepolis India, who said a Rajinikanth film is the hallmark of an event film and that across Cinepolis cinemas in the south opening-day shows ran at close to 70 to 80 percent occupancy, with Tamil Nadu houseful. He expected the film to cross Rs 200 crore over the weekend. Miraj Entertainment's chief operating officer Sameer Munshi said all its cinemas playing the film ran at over 90 percent occupancy and expected that to hold. An exhibitor in Kerala said the absence of a major Malayalam release should help the film's run there.
The wider market
The film arrived in a year when, according to Moneycontrol's trade estimates, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada films together have earned Rs 4,198.41 crore at the Indian box office. The Indian Express live blog says that before this film no Tamil film had become a blockbuster in 2026, naming Vijay's Jana Nayagan and Suriya's Karuppu as the biggest hits so far, neither of which crossed Rs 350 crore.
IndiaX24's comparison of the weekend's Hindi openings notes that the three Hindi films opening on Oct. 16 had a combined known opening of about Rs 5.64 crore net, less than 10 percent of Jailer 2's first day on its own calculation. That figure is IndiaX24's own arithmetic, not a trade statement.
The film
Nelson Dilipkumar directs, Anirudh composes and Sun Pictures produces, according to Dishalu. It released in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi, with a Kannada version reported by Moneycontrol. Reviews, which we cover separately, praise Rajinikanth and the first half and are divided on the second.
Why it matters
A Rs 60 crore opening sets a high bar for the next weeks of the year, and for the films that opened around it. Ranabaali opened a day later and Hindi releases the same Friday had much smaller starts. Whether Jailer 2 holds depends on the second-week drop, which these sources do not yet show.
What we could not confirm
We could not confirm any producer figure. Rs 59.70 crore and about Rs 60 crore are tracker or trade estimates, and the Rs 144.60 crore total is a single tracker's figure. We could not reconcile how Dishalu's Rs 125 crore global day-one gross relates to Moneycontrol's report that the film crossed Rs 100 crore worldwide. We have not seen the film.
