S. J. Suryah: The Director Who Became Jailer 2's Villain
S. J. Suryah plays Bodhi Kalpak in Jailer 2, and reviews split on whether the villains work. His path from director to screen antagonist.

S. J. Suryah plays Bodhi Kalpak, one of the antagonists of Jailer 2. Reviews of the film are split on its villains, but several single him out as the one who makes an impact. The reasons lie partly in a career that began behind the camera.
The role
The Hindu's Bhuvanesh Chandar says Bodhi Kalpak, played by S. J. Suryah, is breathing down the neck of another gangster, Dhileep, to get a job done, which sets the first film's story moving again. Rediff lists the Kalpak family, led by Mithun Chakraborty as the patriarch Chakri Kalpak, with four children: Kantha, played by Vidya Balan, Bodhi, played by S. J. Suryah, Sarva, played by Hakim Shahjahan, and Ved, played by Jatin Sarna.
What critics said about him
Rediff's Sreeju Sudhakaran writes that only Kantha and Bodhi matter much, and that only S. J. Suryah makes some sort of impact, largely because he gets to be S. J. Suryah without going too overboard. Filmfare's Rohit Panikker is more guarded. He writes that Suryah brings his trademark flamboyance to the antagonist's role, though his increasingly familiar mannerisms threaten to turn the performance into a caricature. Filmfare also says the crowded narrative leaves limited room to develop either antagonist beyond their function in the hero's plan.
The reviews disagree about the villains as a group. Rediff says the Kalpak family never lives up to the evil the film promises. Deccan Chronicle's headline calls the film a forced, substance-less sequel, and its excerpt says the villain track involving Suryah and his family fails to blend naturally into the larger narrative.
The career
Wikipedia says Samanasapandian Justin Selvaraj, known as S. J. Suryah, was born on July 20, 1968, and works mainly in Tamil cinema as an actor, director, producer, playback singer and writer. He wanted to become an actor but started out as a director, assisting Vasanth and Sabapathy. His directorial debut, Vaalee (1999), was a success that took him to stardom, and his other directorial credits include Kushi (2000), New (2004) and Anbe Aaruyire (2005).
He made his acting debut in New and went on to act in Kalvanin Kadhali, Thirumagan and Vyabari. Wikipedia lists his antagonist roles in Spyder (2017), Mersal (2017), Maanaadu (2021), Don (2022), Mark Antony (2023), Indian 2 (2024), Saripodhaa Sanivaaram (2024), Game Changer (2025) and Love Insurance Kompany (2026). It lists his lead roles in Kadamaiyai Sei (2022) and Jigarthanda DoubleX (2023).
He also appears in Dhanush's Raayan, according to its cast list on Wikipedia.
Why it matters
Villain roles in big star vehicles carry a particular risk, because the hero is built to win. Rediff says as much about Jailer 2, noting that an all-powerful hero leaves villains as sitting ducks. In that setting a villain who registers at all is notable, and Suryah is the one the reviews we read name.
What we could not confirm
We read The Hindu, Filmfare and Rediff in part or in full, and the Deccan Chronicle through an excerpt. We could not confirm the film's cast beyond what the reviewers list. We have not seen the film. Wikipedia's list of Suryah's roles is partial and we have not checked it against the films.
